Wholesalers renew call for ban on exclusive supply arrangements for PBS medicines : 18/07/2013 :

The National Pharmaceutical Services Association (NPSA), representing full line pharmacy wholesalers, has warned that reliable access to PBS medicines will be threatened if others in the industry move to an exclusive direct distribution model. This follows recent media reports that almost one-third of pharma companies are considering moving to a Pfizer Direct type distribution model.

Referring to the 2011 Deloitte Access Economics Report: ‘Economic analysis of exclusive distribution of PBS medicines’ the NPSA has warned that further moves by manufacturers to sideline the full-line wholesalers will erode the viability of the Community Service Obligation (CSO).

Poll: who should be around the table with government negotiating the next community pharmacy agreement? : 17/07/2013 :

Ever since the last community pharmacy agreement was finalised late in 2009 there has been debate on AusPharmList and in the mainstream media about who should participate in the negotiations for  the next community pharmacy agreement.

Arguments have been put by the Consumers Heath Forum (CHF) that consumers should be represented - after all, the agreement's principle purpose is to meet their needs - and by employee pharmacist union Professional Pharmacists Australia (PPA) that they should be there too in order to represent the sector with the largest number of pharmacists. The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia claims the right to be there to safeguard the 'professional' aspects of the agreement.

Counter arguments have been put that the only pharmacy group with a genuine claim to be there is the Pharmacy Guild. The agreements are, after all, overwhelmingly about the mechanism for the supply of PBS benefits through pharmacies owned by its members. Hold on - hospitals can now dispense PBS scripts too, so should the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (SHPA) also be represented?

Who do you think should be around the table negotiating the next community pharmacy agreement? Please let us know by voting in this week's AusPharm poll.

The topic of this week's RGH E‑Bulletin is Grover’s disease.

"Grover’s disease (also known as transient and persistentacantholyticdermatosis) is a non-immune mediated dermatological condition which often presents with a pruritic, papulovesicular rash, most commonly distributed on the trunk. The rash usually begins with a sudden onset of small papules and vesicles which can quickly progress to become blistered, crusted or eroded. Grover’s disease is a condition which predominantly affects males, with men being affected up to three times more than women. It is thought that Grover’s disease also more commonly affects the middle aged to elderly, with older patients more likely to have extensive eruptions of longer duration."
