Peak bodies defend CAMs : 21/05/2013 :

Both the Complementary Healthcare Council (CHC) and the Australian Self Medication Industry (ASMI) have leapt to the defence of complementary medicines (CAMs) following the publication last week of a story critical of CAMS in the Fairfax press.

The story highlights the view of some commentators that, despite recent moves for regulatory change, much more still needs to be done to protect consumers  from the unfounded therapeutic claims made for some CAMs by some manufacturers.

GMiA: new report flawed : 21/05/2013 :

The Generic Medicines Industry Association (GMiA) said yesterday that the report of the Centre for Strategic Economic Studies into the PBS reforms is flawed because it does not consider the medium term impact of competition in the generic medicines sector, the consequences for the future viability of the generic medicines sector and the sectors ongoing ability to deliver medicines to patients.

GMiA acknowledges that PBS reform will generate significant savings - up to $18 billion dollars over eight years - but says that its members are very concerned about the medium term consequences of 'reaping such significant sums of money from the generic medicines industry and the ramifications this will have on the continued surety of supply of generic medicines to patients'.

OTC pain relievers are for relieving pain, not for pain prevention : 20/05/2013 :

As one of those who puffed and panted their way through yesterday's 11k City To Casino fun run in Hobart, AusPharm took more notice than we othwewise might have of a media release issued by The Australian Self-Medication Industry (ASMI) on Friday counselling that OTC NSAIDs should not be used to avoid or prevent pain.

ASMI highlighted a study published last month in BMJ Open which looked at the pre-race use of pain relievers among runners at the 2010 Bonn Marathon in Germany. >From almost 4,000 runners surveyed, half (49 per cent) said they took them to curb or ward off pain during the race, and most reportedly used the medications at higher doses than recommended.

About half the pharmacists voting in this week's AusPharm poll spent more on CPD last financial year than the $2,000 set as the limit for tax deductions in Tuesday night's budget. A significant number (14%) spent more than $5,000 with about a third of those voting saying they spent less than $500.

As reported in AusPharm on Wednesday, the government has flagged that it will consult with stakeholders prior to implementing the measure with a discussion paper due to be released later this month.

Medicines Partnership: no need for further PBS reform : 17/05/2013 :

The Medicines Partnership of Australia (MPA) has jumped on this week's PBS budget forward estimates to further argue its case that PBS expenditure is under control and that there is no need for further reform.

The Budget confirmed the impact PBS price reforms are having on PBS expenditure, delivering over the next four years an additional $2.5 billion in savings above that previously forecast.

MPA points out that none of this will come from new savings measures and will be delivered by the existing program of price disclosure.

TGA consultation: Mechanisms to maintain the currency of PI and CMI : 15/05/2013 :

The TGA is reviewing the way medicine Prescribing Information (PI) and Consumer Medicies Information (CMI) is prepared and mechanisms which might be used to maintain their currency.

One of the recommendations of the 2010 TGA 'transparency' review was that the TGA consider processes and regulatory changes that would help ensure that CMI and PI reflect current circumstances. The Review Panel considered that the TGA, in the first instance, needed to explore a mechanism to maintain the currency of CMIs and PIs, including consideration of links to other information providers.

PBS expenditure forecasts have been reduced by a further $2.5 billion over the (4 year) forward estimates. This is on top of the $1.6 billion in savings forecast in last year's budget.
