RGH E‑Bulletin: Rare adverse effects of blood glucose lowering medications : 13/05/2013 :

The topic of this week's RGH E‑Bulletin is Rare adverse effects of blood glucose lowering medications.

"This E-Bulletin will focus upon the rarer adverse effects of two new classes of blood glucose lowering medications. The dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors (or gliptins) and the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogues are relatively new classes of drugs that are available as options for the management of high blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes. These classes appear to be less effective in lowering HbA1c* compared with metformin, the sulfonylureas and insulin — the DPP-4 inhibitors reduce HbA1c by 0.5–0.8%, and the GLP-1 analogues reduce HbA1c by 0.5–1%, compared with placebo.
