Pharmacists working harder than 5 years ago : 28/09/2012 :

This week's AusPharm poll asked pharmacist to tell use how many scripts are dispensed per pharmacist day in their pharmacies.

The results, shown below, tell us that most pharmacies produced results in the 100-200 range with significant minorities in the 50-100 range (14%) and the 200-250 (14%) range.

Significantly, there has been a trend towards larger numbers since we ran the same poll (albeit with very slightly different options) in 2006.

Wait 7 years before taking new drugs : 28/09/2012 :

Before taking any new drug, you should wait at least seven years from its date of release, writes Sidney Wolfe, Editor of Worst Pills, Best Pills News, in an editorial in the October issue of Australia Prescriber.

Unless it is a rare ‘breakthrough’ drug that offers a clear therapeutic advantage over older proven drugs, he writes, it’s worth waiting this amount of time for the information about adverse effects to catch up with the information about benefits.

AusPharm CE: Suicide in Australia – an overview : 27/09/2012 :

The latest AusPharm CE topic is Suicide in Australia – an overview - it's been put together for us by Professor Nerida Smith.

"The 10th of September is World Suicide Prevention Day. It is a day for remembrance and reflection, as well as a time to review the actions taken to reduce the "hidden toll" of suicide. More lives are lost to suicide than to deaths on our roads. Suicide has been described by concerned health professionals as a "hidden epidemic", costing the Australian economy an estimate.d $17 billion each year. The impact on the survivors, such as spouses, parents, children, family, friends and co-workers who are left behind, is significant both immediately and in the long-term"

The Learning Objectives for this activity are:

  • characteristics of suicide in Australia
  • risk factors, triggers, warming signs and signs of imminent risk in relation to suicide
  • strategies used to prevent suicide
  • examples of suicide prevention training
  • examples of sources of crisis help and suicide prevention information in Australia.

Click here to do this Continuing Education activity. Or, if you prefer, you might like to take a look at our other CE activities here .

Whole of profession support for in pharmacy immunisation : 24/09/2012 :

At a meeting held this month, the Australian Pharmacy Liaison Forum (APLF), an independent coalition of representatives from 10 national pharmacy organisations, said that it supported the implementation of community pharmacy immunisation services similar to those in place in a number of overseas countries.

According to APLF, by working as part of the primary health care team, pharmacists already offer a range of professional pharmacy services that improve the health outcomes of consumers. The provision of immunisation services, it says, is a logical extension of these professional services.

SHPA: is the rural intern incentive allowance biased? : 24/09/2012 :

According to the Society of Hospital Pharmacist of Australia, recent promotional activity for the Intern Incentive Allowance for Rural Pharmacies which is funded as part of the Fifth Community Pharmacy Agreement is misleading as it overstates how applicable the allowance will be to hospital pharmacies.

The Society says that publicity has emphasised the fact that community pharmacists AND hospitals can attract pharmacy interns and be assisted with funding – but SHPA says it believes that this allowance will be of limited value to improving the recruitment of pharmacy interns to rural and remote hospitals because few, if any hospitals would satisfy the eligibility criteria for this funding.

RGH E‑Bulletin: Duration of dual antiplatelet therapy after coronary stenting : 24/09/2012 :

The topic of this week's RGH E‑Bulletin is Duration of dual-antiplatelet therapy after coronary stenting.

"Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) encompasses the spectrum of unstable angina and myocardial infarction, with or without ST elevation. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) including coronary stenting is often performed in this context. Both ACS and PCI are associated with high levels of platelet activation, and thus dual-antiplatelet therapy with aspirin and clopidogrel is essential after coronary stent implantation to reduce the risk of thrombosis. A longer duration of dual-antiplatelet therapies is often required after implantation of drug-eluting stents due to delayed endothelialisation, but the optimal duration of dual antiplatelet therapies and the associated risk-benefit ratio is not well defined.

Union: Guild misrepresenting position on penalty rates : 24/09/2012 :

Pointing to comments made by a business group of which it is a member, pharmacist employee union, APESMA says the Guild is misrepresenting its position on employee penalty rates.

In February the Franchise Council of Australia, of which the Guild is a member, issued a communique which 'Called on the Federal Government to substantially reduce penalty rates that apply under Federal Awards in recognition that penalty rates are imposing unreasonable costs on businesses and undermining business trading to the detriment of consumers'.

APESMA says the Guild's recent rejection of the union's claims that it is trying to demolish penalty rates misrepresents its true position, as stated in the Franchise Council communique.
