The authors of the US study concluded that paracetamol hepatotoxicity far exceeded other causes of acute liver failure in the US and education of patients, doctors and pharmacies to limit use in high-risk settings was recommended.

ASMI: multivitamins useful for some : 08/08/2012 :

Responding to comments from CHOICE that people eating a balanced diet are likely wasting their money if purchasing multivitamins, the Australian Self-Medication Industry (ASMI) said yesterday that multivitamins have a legitimate place in the wider health system and remain important for people whose dietary intake is inadequate.

ASMI Regulatory and Scientific Affairs Director, Steven Scarff, said that comments by Choice seem to reflect a blanket view of the Australian health landscape, and ignore the real needs of certain segments who do not get the required level of nutrients.

His comments came during a speech at Saturday's Australian College of Pharmacy conference dinner in Brisbane. Mr Chapman also took aim at the 'disgrace' of low salary rates for many young pharmacists and the need to find a more affordable way for young pharmacists to gain an ownership foot-hold.

RGH E‑Bulletin: Dosing of antibiotics and therapeutic drug monitoring. : 06/08/2012 :

The topic of this week's RGH E‑Bulletin is Dosing of antibiotics and therapeutic drug monitoring.

"Aminoglycosides exert a post-antibiotic effect: high peak levels are required to penetrate the bacterial cell wall, where the drug continues to have a bactericidal effect after systemic levels have declined. Monitoring is used to ensure adequacy of dosing, to delay or prevent the onset of nephrotoxicity and reduce the risk of vestibular and auditory ototoxicity. Initial gentamicin dosing is based on bodyweight to ensure an adequate peak concentration. Modified dose is needed with increasing age (as per the Therapeutic Guidelines Antibiotic, below). Clearance of aminoglycosides is increased in children, patients with sepsis, and patients with cystic fibrosis; these patient groups require increased initial doses."
