Medicines top of hi-tech exporters list for 2011-12 : 03/08/2012 :

The medicines industry was the Australian manufacturing sector’s biggest high-tech export earner in 2011-12 according to figures published yesterday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The new ABS report shows exports of pharmaceutical and medicinal products totaled $4.059 billion in 2011-12, up from $3.744 billion in 2010-11.

Guild rejects union claims : 03/08/2012 :

The Pharmacy Guild has rejected as an 'unsustainable slur' comments by pharmacist employee union APESMA yesterday that there is a “culture of illegal workplace practices in pharmacies across Australia.”

The Guild's comments follow claims by the union that the Review of the Fair Work Act released yesterday is critical of the Guild for encouraging pharmacies to use template Individual Flexibility Agreements (IFAs).

Pharmacy groups colocate : 03/08/2012 :

The Australian College of Pharmacy, the Australian Association of Consultant Pharmacy and the National Australian Pharmacy Students’ Association are all now sharing new premises just 10 minutes from the Canberra CBD.

With around 3,500 members per association, 10,500 pharmacy professionals are now represented from the one central location.

The next in our 2012 series of continuing education activities is the RGH E-Bulletin Digest No. 49

This CE activity assesses your understanding of four recent RGH Pharmacy E-Bulletins (Volumes 46-6 - 46-9  --> May - June 2012).

After completing this activity, pharmacists should be able to:

  • Discuss the clinical pharmacology of apixaban
  • Describe current developments regarding dextropropoxyphene products in Australia
  • Understand principles relevant to the systemic absorption of drugs after ocular administration
  • Outline important clinical issues relating to antibiotic resistance

PHARMeFOOTY weekly wrap : 02/08/2012 :

AFL - Round 18

Round 18 of the 2012 AFL season started off with Hawthorn and Essendon, in an intense game it was the Hawks who were triumphant by a huge margin of 94 points. Other matches for the week saw the Cats dismantle a determined Adelaide side at Simmonds Stadium by 27 points, North Melbourne defeating the Demons by 54 points and Collingwood making light work of the Giants defeating them by a colossal margin of 120 points at Skoda Stadium.

NRL - Round 21

Round 21 of the 2012 NRL season commenced with the Dragons and the Storm, in an intense match it was the Dragons who were victorious. Other games for the round saw the Titans defeat the Roosters 36-16 at Allianz Stadium the Sea Eagles defeat the Warriors 24-22 and the Panthers stealing the win against the Sharks 21-20 at Toyota Stadium.

TGA adverse reactions database goes live : 02/08/2012 :

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) yesterday made live a medicines adverse events (ADR) database that gives access to information about adverse events to medicines that have been reported to the TGA since 1971.

The Database of Adverse Event Notifications, which currently contains around 251,000 ADR reports includes reports made by consumers, health professionals and industry about prescription, OTC and complementary medicines such as vitamins and herbal remedies.

Two new Pharmacy Board members appointed : 02/08/2012 :

The members of the Pharmacy Board of Australia for the next three years were announced by the Australian Health Workforce Ministerial Council on Monday.

There are two changes to the new Board. Queensland pharmacist Tim Logan (not available for reappointment) has been replaced by Brett Simmonds and the Katherine (Katie) Sloper has been appointed as one of the community members. Steve Marty has been re-appointed as Chair of the Board.

GP-Pharmacist collaboration under spotlight : 01/08/2012 :

The need for greater collaboration between health-care professionals in order to put the focus on patients and their health outcomes was the central theme to emerge from special session of the World Health Care Networks Conference held in Cairns over the past few days.
 
The session, “Integrating Pharmacy with General Practice,” was facilitated by the Chief Executive Officer of PSA, Liesel Wett, and included a panel of prominent GPs and pharmacists from Australia and New Zealand. The session highlighted the collaborative models of care being delivered to consumers by GP and pharmacist teams in Australia and New Zealand.

Six teams, from four Universities - Sydney University, University of South Australia, University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology – have been awarded places in the semi-finals of the National Student Business Plan Competition, an Australia-wide challenge promoting creative entrepreneurship among students preparing for a career in community pharmacy.

The semi-final round closes on 24th August 2012, with the top three teams progressing to the finals at the Pharmacy Business Network, Canberra 13 – 16 September 2012. The competition was open to all pharmacy schools in Australia, with a total of eighteen entries received this year.

Pharmacists 7th on Reader's Digest 'Most trusted profession' list : 31/07/2012 :

Pharmacists have come in 7th place in the 2012 Reader's Digest Most Trusted Profession survey, down one place on the 2010 and 2011 results, which saw pharmacists rank 6th. Top of the 2012 list were paramedics, followed by firefighters and rescue volunteers. Nurses came in 4th and doctors 6th.

In the Most Popular Brand survey, for the fourth year in a row Blackmores topped the Vitamins and Supplements section with Panadol topping the Pain Relief category ahead of Herron and Nurofen.

People with back problems more likely to have mental health problems too : 31/07/2012 :

People with back problems are more likely to report psychological distress and mental disorders than people without back problems, according to new information released yesterday by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

The web-based snapshot on back problems shows that 1 in 11 Australians (1.8 million people) had back problems in 2007–08.

Comments on Medicines Australia new Code of Conduct - deadline is today : 30/07/2012 :

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is currently assessing for authorisation the  Medicines Australia Code of Conduct Edition 17. The ACCC is inviting comments on the application.

A copy of the application, a supporting submission and Code is available on the ACCC’s website here. The authorisation process is detailed here.

New tool to help diagnose and manage low back pain : 30/07/2012 :

NPS and The George Institute for Global Health have jointly launched a new decision support tool to assist primary care clinicians diagnose and manage low back pain in line with best practice guidelines.

The new back pain tool ­ Back Pain Choices ­ synthesises recommendations from evidence-based practice guidelines in Australia, the UK and USA into a unified set of recommendations. It incorporates individual patient preferences so that, after a consultation, the patient has an individually tailored management plan and/or information sheet.

New NAPSA President joins Council committee : 30/07/2012 :

New National Australian Pharmacy Students Association (NAPSA) President, Chris Braithwaite, has attended his first Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) Accreditation Committee meeting.

The Accreditation Committee is a standing committee of APC that advises the APC on accreditation matters involving pharmacy schools and programs; intern training programs and continuing professional development. The Accreditation Committee has amongst its members a nominee from NAPSA who is appointed by NAPSA at its Annual General Meeting.

New headache diary now available from NPS : 30/07/2012 :

New survey results from NPS released during the recent National Pain Week 2012 suggest that headache pain could affect as many as 1 in 10 Australians every week. Yet many may have trouble pinpointing the possible triggers for their headaches.

With this in mind, NPS has launched a new headache diary to help people with frequent headaches to understand and manage their headaches.

PBS costs growing at 12% YTD : 30/07/2012 :

Claims from the pharma industry and other stakeholders that PBS costs are under control appear in doubt following the release last week of June 2012 PBS numbers.

These show large increases in both script numbers (+75%) and dollars (+67%) compared to June 2011. While these increases are undoubtedly the result of Medicare processing anomalies, the year to date increases are also significant.
