1 in 20 GP scripts ripe for pharmacist intervention in the UK : 08/05/2012 :

With research results showing 1 in 20 GP scripts in the UK had a prescribing or monitoring error, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society is taking the opportunity to call for a pharmacist in every GP practice to make patient care safer.

The research, conducted by the University of Nottingham for the General Medical Council (GMC, the body governing doctors) investigated the prevalence and nature of prescribing errors in general practice, explored the causes, and identified defences against errors. The GMC research report (259-pages) is available online.

Online Training Available for Suicide Prevention Professionals : 08/05/2012 :

The government has launched online training package aimed at aiding Australians who have attempted or are at risk of suicide or self-harm.

Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler and Member for Petrie Yvette D’Ath today launched the training package during a visit to the Metro North Brisbane Medicare Local.

PSA: pharmacists can help : 08/05/2012 :

The tightening economic situation and the imperative to return to a budget surplus should not deter the Federal Government from addressing health issues affecting some of the more vulnerable members of society, the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia says.
 
Acting President of the PSA, Dr Claire O’Reilly, said the PSA had presented a viable and sustainable proposal which would see pharmacists playing a key role in targeting shortcomings in the safety and quality of health services for high-risk population groups.

In an opinion piece in todays' Australian newspaper, welll connected health journalist Sue Dunlevey writes, "The Australian understands the government is poised to review the cost-effectiveness of certain diabetes and heart medicines as it pursues further savings in the PBS."

Labelling of fexofenadine and loperamide : 07/05/2012 :

The TGA is seeking comments from interested parties on the proposed advisory statements for fexofenadine and loperamide for inclusion in the Required Advisory Statements for Medicine Labels (RASML) document when it is next updated.

The need to update the advisory statement stems from the 2011 decisions to exempt from scheduling small packs of these products.

PAC12 call for abstracts : 07/05/2012 :

Pharmacy practitioners are being encouraged to share their work with their peers by submitting posters and oral presentations for Australia’s premier pharmacy event, the Pharmacy Australia Congress (PAC12).

Organisers of PAC12 are calling for abstracts for poster and oral presentations from researchers and practitioners who are working in pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical science.

Medicines Partnership of Australia: PBS expenditure now falling in real terms : 07/05/2012 :

Recent Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) data shows no growth in real terms, confirming the ongoing viability of the best subsidised medicine scheme in the world, says the Medicines Partnership of Australia.

Growth in Federal Government expenditure on the PBS in the 12 months to 31 March 2012 was just 0.8%.  After adjusting for inflation, currently at 1.6%, this represents a decline of 0.8% in real terms.  This is well below the Government’s own target of two per cent growth in real terms.

Pharmacists join heart campaign : 07/05/2012 :

Pharmacists across Australia this week are helping to raise public awareness of heart attack warning signs by taking part in Heart Week (6-12 May) activities, particularly the new Heart Foundation program ‘Will you recognise your heart attack?’
 
Participating pharmacists will have a range of materials available, and Self Care pharmacies will have the new ‘Warning Signs of Heart Attack’ fact card to distribute to customers.

RGH E-Bulletin: Fampridine for symptomatic management of MS : 07/05/2012 :

The topic of this week's RGH E‑Bulletin is Fampridine for symptomatic management of MS.

"Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated disorder that can result in considerable disability for those affected, and also impacting significantly upon their extended supports. Characterised by the inflammation and demyelination of the nerves of the central nervous system, MS results in varying degrees of change in sensory, motor and cognitive function. Although the development of immunomodulatory therapies has changed the course of the natural progression of MS, a cure remains elusive and treatment focus remains on the symptomatic management of the disease."

PSA applauds Skerritt appointment : 04/05/2012 :

The appointment of Dr John Skerritt, pictured right, as the National Manager of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has been welcomed by the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia.

Acting President of the PSA, Dr Claire O’Reilly, said Dr Skerritt’s extensive experience, particularly his PhD in pharmacology, would bring great depth and knowledge to the TGA.

Face to Face sessions a hit for College : 04/05/2012 :

On the 17th April in Brisbane over 100 attendees were treated to the first of the Australian College of Pharmacy face to face sessions for 2012, and there are more planned.

In conjunction with Blackmores, the first of 9 free national roadshows kicked off at the Brisbane Victoria Park Function Centre on the topic of Drug Influences on Nutrient Levels. The session examined the evidence based relationships between medicines and nutrients and was co -resented by Dr Bret McFarlane and Dr Treasure McGuire drug information pharmacist, educator and researcher.

New TGA head appointed : 03/05/2012 :

The federal government announced yesterday that it has appointed Dr John Skerritt as the new National Manager of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

In making the announcement yesterday, the Secretary of the DoHA, Professor Jane Halton, said Dr John Skerritt, who has a PhD in Pharmacology and is an adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland, is currently the Deputy Secretary of the Department of Primary Industries in the Victorian Government brings to the TGA extensive experience in medical, agricultural and environmental policy, regulation, research, research management, technology application and commercialisation.

PCHR killed off : 03/05/2012 :

The former members of the Pharmacist Coalition for Health Reform, the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA), the Society of Hospital Pharmacists (SHPA) and the Pharmacists Division of the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia (APESMA) announced yesterday that the coalition has been disbanded.

The group has been inactive since December last year when the members were in apparent disagreement over their support for Green's Senator de Natali's call for a Senate inquiry into the 5th Community Pharmacy Agreement.

PHARMeFOOTY weekly wrap : 03/05/2012 :

AFL Round 5

Round 5 of the 2012 AFL season opened up with the traditional Anzac Day game featuring Collingwood and Essendon, both teams fought hard however Collingwood held on to the win by 1 point. Other highlights of the round included a baby blue infused Carlton outfit having an 8 point win over Fremantle at Paterson's Stadium, the Doggies overpowering the Giants by 42 points and the Kangaroos jumping up to 7th place on the ladder by defeating the Suns.

NRL Round 8

Round 8 of the 2012 NRL season saw the Dragons defeat the Roosters by a slim margin of 4 and many other interesting outcomes. Highlights for this week included the Storm remaining undefeated by beating the NZ Warriors 32-14, the Sea Eagles defeating the Bulldogs in a very intense match and the Broncos thumping the Titans 26-6.
