More caution needed in opioid prescribing for chronic pain : 01/09/2015 :

Peak Australian physician group, the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) has used yesterday's International Overdose Awareness Day to call for greater awareness of the over-prescribing of opioid prescription medication for pain.

According to the latest National Drug Strategy Household Survey (NDSHS) report, the misuse of painkillers increased from 4.8 per cent of the Australian population in 2010, to 7.7 per cent in 2013.

"Anti-inflammatory drugs are among the most commonly used medications in the world, being available over-the-counter and by prescription. Adverse effects on renal function, blood pressure and gastrointestinal mucosa have been well-defined in the literature and in practice. Their potential to cause cardiovascular adverse events such as MI, stroke, HF and even death is known but less well-defined. The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration has conducted a review on the cardiovascular safety of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, releasing the findings in October 2014."

Poll: adding your clinical recommendations to a shared online electronic health record : 26/08/2015 :

Last week's AusPharm poll found that there is little confidence amongst pharmacists that a useable shared online electronic health record will be a reality any time soon. Nevertheless, presumably it WILL eventuate one day.

When/if it does it has the potential to be a valuable repository of the patient’s medical history for health professionals with appropriate credentials to amend and view.

Will you be comfortable recording the recommendations you make to your patients given they could be scrutinised by their doctors and others? Or does the prospect frighten you?

Please let us know by voting in today's AusPharm poll.
