New Fact Sheet - 2015 PBS Price Disclosure Changes : 13/08/2015 :

A new Fact Sheet detailing the 2015 Price Disclosure Changes arising from the 2015 Access and Sustainability package of changes to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) is now available on the PBS website.

The Fact Sheet includes detailed information about the removal of originator brand data from price disclosure calculations and the flow-on reductions to F2 combination items and ‘low volume / low discount no reduction’ pharmaceutical items.

CAM manufacturer disputes findings of Monash CAMs in menopause paper : 13/08/2015 :

Nigel Pollard, founder of 'clinically proven' complementary medicine (CAM) supplier Flordis has questioned the findings of a recent study into CAM use to treat the symptoms of menopause which concluded 'the use of CAMs for alleviating vasomotor symptoms ‘are known to be ineffective’ and that ‘black cohosh appear[s] to be no more effective than placebo’.

Mr Pollard said the paper, published in the Medical Journal of Australia - Use of complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) for menopausal women - contained 'a number of misleading statements'.

Food as a treatment for depression? : 13/08/2015 :

Nutrients commonly found in spinach, oysters and crab and the positive effects they may have on people with clinical depression are the focus of a University of Queensland study about to get underway.

UQ School of Medicine’s Professor Gerard Byrne said that during the study people with clinical depression would be offered a combination of nutrient-based medications to enhance their mood.

“Current treatments for clinical depression are only partially effective with about two-thirds of people treated with first-line anti-depressants not reaching remission,” Professor Byrne said.

PSA launches sleep apnoea service guidelines to standardise services within pharmacies : 13/08/2015 :

Guidelines aimed at promoting the standardisation of sleep apnoea services within pharmacies in Australia were launched at the recent PSA15 conference.

The Practice guidelines for the provision of sleep apnoea services within pharmacy provide assistance to pharmacists on professional issues and obligations relating to pharmacy sleep apnoea services.

PSA President, Joe Demarte, said the guidelines were a result of PSA’s ongoing recognition of the importance of continuity of care within the healthcare environment.

NRAS a unique and substantial achievement : 13/08/2015 :

A three year review of the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (NRAS)  has been finalised and the report publicly released.

The report acknowledges the ‘unique and substantial achievement’ of the scheme, highlighting the overwhelming support for its introduction in 2010. Through AHPRA, it now regulates nationally Australia’s more than 619,500 health practitioners.

Single national registration removed the necessity for health professionals to be separately registered in each state and territory and, also, ensured that any health practitioner found to have committed misconduct in one jurisdiction could no longer practise undetected in other states or territories.

Big growth in Asian pharma market forecast : 12/08/2015 :

The new (4th) edition of Medicines Australia Facts Book reveals that the global market for medicines and vaccines is set to double over the next decade, with much of the growth coming from Asia.

This will provide opportunities for investment and manufacturing in Australia but only, says Medicines Australia, if a stable and globally competitive policy environment - achieved through strong collaboration between policy makers and industry - exists to attract further investment locally.

Record attendance at TWC conference : 12/08/2015 :

With more than 500 delegates in attendance, the Terry White Chemists conference currently underway in Melbourne may well be the largest brand-led pharmacy conference Australia has ever seen.

Chief Executive Officer Anthony White said the numbers in attendance demonstrated the group’s passion, commitment and dedication to celebrate its recent successes.

The $1.2 billion group now totals more than 220 pharmacies following its acquisition of Chemplus Pty Ltd – the franchise management company for the South Australian ‘Chemplus’ network of pharmacies.

Consultation draft of new National Asthma Strategy released : 12/08/2015 :

Around 2.3 million Australians have asthma, and poor control of the condition is common, according to a consultation draft of the National Asthma Strategy 2016-2020, released this week.

The Strategy notes that while considerable progress has been made in treating asthma successfully over many years - most notably evidenced by a decrease in asthma-related deaths - the number of deaths and the prevalence of asthma is still high.

1 in 5 Australians affected by multiple chronic diseases : 12/08/2015 :

New data released today by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) reveals that about half of all Australians have a chronic disease, and around 20% have at least two.

The new data covers eight chronic diseases: arthritis, asthma, back problems, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and mental health conditions.

‘Sometimes these diseases occur together simply by chance, but often it’s because there are some associations between them, such as shared risk factors,’ said AIHW spokesperson Louise York.

English pharmacies get access to health records : 11/08/2015 :

Community pharmacies across England will soon have access to patients' health records, in the form of Summary Care Records (SCR).

SCRs provides key clinical information about a patient, sourced from the GP record. It can be used by authorised healthcare professionals, with the patient's consent, to support their care and treatment. Community pharmacists and pharmacy technicians will be provided with secure, approved and monitored access to the SCR.

Pharmacists' role in allergy acknowledged : 11/08/2015 :

The potential of pharmacists to contribute to the health of patients suffering from allergic conditions has been explicitly acknowledged in a new National Allergy Strategy, published on Friday.

The word 'pharmacist' occurs at least 13 times in the Strategy - a welcome change from some other primary care initiatives in recent years, in which pharmacists have failed to rate a mention.

RGH E‑Bulletin: Complex regional pain syndrome : 10/08/2015 :

The topic of this week's RGH E‑Bulletin is Complex regional pain syndrome.

"Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a debilitating condition which can occur either spontaneously or is triggered by injury (strain or sprain), distal fracture or surgery. Symptoms include oedema and sweating, erythema and changes in skin temperature, motor dysfunction, allodynia (increased pain sensed with non-painful stimulus), hyperalgesia and trophic changes in skin hair and nails."

Australian Medicine exports drop by 30 per cent in one year : 10/08/2015 :

New Australian Bureau of Statistics data reveals that, in the first 6-months of 2015, Australian medicines manufacturing exports were $1.06 billion, compared to $1.49 billion in the first half of 2014, representing a 28.5 per cent decline.

In the year ending 30 June 2015, pharmaceutical exports were 30 per cent lower than for the year ending 30 June 2014.

Five years ago, medicines were Australia’s largest manufactured export, bringing in more than $4 billion to the local economy but it have now slipped to second place behind the motor vehicle industry and, if the trend continues, medicine manufacturing will shortly drop to third.

Proposal to allow consumer ads for pantoprazole, naproxen : 10/08/2015 :

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is inviting input from interested parties on a number of proposed amendments to medicines scheduling.

Among them are proposals to include both naproxen and pantoprazole in Appendix H, which would allow Schedule 3 products containing them to be advertised direct to the public.

PSA honours outstanding NSW pharmacists : 10/08/2015 :

The NSW Branch of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia has recognised three of its members for their outstanding achievements in the profession.

At a ceremony held during the recent PSA15 in Sydney, awards were presented to Chris Piggott, Catherine Bronger and Tabitha Jones.

Sweet revenge against superbugs : 06/08/2015 :

A special type of synthetic sugar could be the latest weapon in the fight against superbugs.

A team of scientists from The University of Queensland and Queensland biotechnology company Alchemia have discovered a potential new class of antibiotics inspired by sugar molecules produced by bacteria.

The research, led by Professor Matt Cooper and Dr Johannes Zuegg from UQ’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) in partnership with Alchemia, is published in the scientific journal Nature Communications.

AusPharm CE: Insomnia : 06/08/2015 :

This month's AusPharm CE activity is called Insomnia ,  and has been put together for us by Dr Jenny Gowan.

"Insomnia is defined as the inability to fall asleep or remain asleep that, because of the amount and the quality of sleep obtained, leads to daytime sleepiness. The patient may have trouble getting to sleep, suffer frequent night-time awakenings, or awaken too early."

This activity has been accredited for 1.5 hrs of Group 1 CPD (or 1.5 CPD credits) suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan which can be converted to 3 hrs of Group 2 CPD (or 3 CPD credits) upon successful completion of relevant assessment activities.
