Poll: pharmacist only ownership of pharmacies : 19/01/2011 :

As we reported on Monday , co-author of the the 2000 review of pharmacy ownership, Terry Barnes, now has some regrets about his role in the review and has questioned the 'public benefit' justification for retaining pharmacist only ownership.

In a post to AusPharmList yesterday Queensland hospital pharmacist Phil Day writes: "I still think that pharmacist only ownership has some merits in terms of protection of public interest and it is probably in the interest of our profession as a whole."

What do you think? Is pharmacist only ownership of pharmacies still appropriate in 2011?

Floods : 17/01/2011 :

As the water levels drop in Queensland (and rise in Victoria) PSA has announced that it is setting up a register to help provide targeted help to pharmacists affected by the floods in Queensland and northern New South Wales. The PSA initiative was announced on Friday, before the Victorian situation arose, and we expect the initiative will extend to Victoria if required.

Pharmacists affected by the floods have been asked to provide PSA with suggestions of what assistance they may need in the coming weeks and months to help them get back on their feet. In addition, PSA has contacted all PSA Members throughout Australia asking for those who can provide any assistance to contact PSA so that their offers can be matched against the needs of affected pharmacists.

RGH E-Bulletin: Therapeutic agents for nicotine dependence & antidepressants : 17/01/2011 :

The topic of this week's RGH E‑Bulletin is Therapeutic agents for nicotine dependence & antidepressants

"The medicines information centre at RGH has been asked many times for advice on the most appropriate medication to aid smoking cessation in a patient with a diagnosis of depression. With the recent listing of nicotine replacement patches for subsidised supply through the Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme for concession card holders, it is timely to review important clinical interactions with the three currently available therapeutic agents used as an aid to smoking cessation and their use in combination with antidepressant therapy."

Many pharmacists daunted by new competency standards : 14/01/2011 :

This week's second AusPharm poll sought to determine to what extent pharmacists have engaged with the new (2010) Competency Standards Framework for Pharmacists in Australia.

The results suggest that, while about a third of pharmacists are relatively comfortable with the new competency document, most of the rest are quite daunted by it with this group ticking the 'I've had a quick look and quickly put it down again' option.

AusPharm's not sure whose role it is to 'sell' the new standards (all pharmacy organisations endorsed them) but whomever has the job still have some work to do to get pharmacists to take ownership of them.

AusPharm CE: Vaginal thrush : 13/01/2011 :

Need to catch up on some CE over the summer break?

Well, here's another one of our most popular CE activities, Vaginal Thrush, first published early in 2009. It was put together for us by Ella Jeffery and the team from UMORE, at the University of Tasmania.

As a special treat for our basic level members we've made this activity available to them too FOR ONE WEEK ONLY.

"After a few weeks of hot, sticky summer weather, a young woman presents in the pharmacy looking slightly embarrassed.  You recognise her as someone who comes in every few months to fill her prescription for an oral contraceptive pill.  She was in about a week ago to fill another prescription for some antibiotics for a respiratory tract infection.  On speaking to the woman she tells you she thinks she has thrush."

This activity has been accredited by the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia as a Group 2 activity for 1 point. Accreditation number: CX090022b.

AusPharm gratefully acknowledges the financial support provided by the sponsor of our CE program, MIMS.
