Poll: pharmacists better superannuation planners than many : 09/07/2010 :

In the context of the recently released Cooper Review into Superannuation this week's AusPharm poll asked pharmacists how well they were preparing for their retirement.

In a result that surprised us somewhat, more pharmacists than not told us they were indeed on top of their superannuation planning / funding. Self employed pharmacists in particular (3.4:1) say they're happy with where they are. The ratio for employees was 1.4:1, and for pharmacists who are both self employed and employees 1.33:1. Only a few people had no idea where they stood or held the view that they were too young for this to matter anyway.

The result of our poll suggests that pharmacists do seem, on the whole, to be better prepared than the community at large, who are thought to be hugely under-funding their superannuation.

NPS defends new consumer Medicines Line arrangements : 06/07/2010 :

As we reported last week,  day to operation of the 'old' NPS Medicines Line passed to healthdirect Australia on July 1. In the first instance, calls are now triaged by nurses but "Complex calls which fall outside the scope of national nursing standards will be referred to either the caller’s doctor, community pharmacist, another health professional or to  NPS."

NPS has defended the new arrangements following an article critical of these published in Pharmacy News yesterday. According to NPS, the article fails to make it clear that pharmacists are still answering calls. "To imply that they have been removed from the service model is simply untrue and inflammatory reporting," NPS says.

TGA finalises review of ADRs to flu vaccines in young children : 06/07/2010 :

Earlier this there were numerous reports of febrile convulsions in children who had been administered the 2010 trivalent influenzea vaccine. As a result of this, in April the TGA advised clinicians not to give flu vaccines to children aged 5 and under 'pending further investigation'.

The TGA has now conducted its investigation and has concluded that, while analyses to date demonstrate an excess of fever and febrile convulsions in children 6 months to 5 years, the overall risk benefit balance remains positive. The TGA reports that while there is a suggestion that the Fluvax brand might be most implicated, data to date are inconclusive.

RGH E-Bulletin: Melatonin : 05/07/2010 :

The topic of this RGH E‑Bulletin is Melatonin.

"Melatonin is a hormone which appears to play a role in the regulation of circadian rhythms. Circulating levels of melatonin follow a diurnal cycle, as its secretion from the pineal gland is stimulated by darkness and inhibited by exposure to light. On the basis of this physiological role, it is thought exogenous melatonin may be useful in restoring altered sleep cycles."

Which Pharma do you *like* best : 05/07/2010 :

There's been lots of discussion on AusPharmList over the years about the shortcomings of Big Pharma in Australia, particularly with respect to prescription medicine packaging but also about the strategies used by some Pharma companies to extend the effective patent life of their products (through 'evergreening').

However, now's your chance to reward the *good* Pharma companies by nominating them for a PRIME award, specifically The Pharmacist's Choice Award for Outstanding Pharmaceutical Company of the Year award. This is the top PRIME award with the winner, as the name suggests, being selected by pharmacists.
