Academic critical of TGA advertising reform proposals : 05/07/2010 :

Last week, the TGA released a consultation document designed to promote discussion on proposed reforms to the advertising of therepeutic goods.

Melbourne academic and outspoken critic of the existing regulatory framework, Dr Ken Harvey, says that he has a number of concerns about the TGA proposals. According to Dr Harvey the TGA proposal to rely on industry self-regulation is off track because this has proven to be weak and self-serving in the past.

Dr Harvey told AusPharm that: "Currently, we have a plethora of industry Codes and complaint systems (MA, GMIA, ASMI, CHC, MTAA, AusBioTech, MIAA and ACCORD) depending upon the type of product (innovator and generic prescription, over-the-counter and complementary medicines, therapeutic devices, food and cosmetics) and the media in which claims are made. While these are convenient for each industry sector, they are inconsistent with respect to transparency, timeliness, sanctions and effectiveness and very confusing for health professionals and consumers."

Many pharmacists still unclear on national registration implications : 02/07/2010 :

This week's poll asked 'listers whether they understood the implications for them of national registration, which came into effect yesterday.

While almost 1/3 of respondents (n=135) said they were 'across it all' the other 2/3 said, to greater or lesser extent, that they aren't.

There are indeed some new aspects to being registered as a pharmacist under the new national legislation. We'll see if we can get comment from the new National Pharmacy Board on some of these issues.

PSA: opposition mental health promises funding awry : 01/07/2010 :

According to the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, plans by the Federal Opposition to boost mental health services are welcome and arguably overdue, but must not be funded at the expense of other health services and initiatives.

The Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott, unveiled a plan on Wednesday under which a Coalition Government would spend $1.5 billion to boost front-line mental health services.  This would include 80 new mental care facilities, including 60 specially tailored to meet the demands of the younger population.

National President of the PSA, Warwick Plunkett said the boost was most welcome but it must not be achieved by slashing funding for other health programs.

“eHealth is the missing link in enabling genuine collaborative primary health-care teams to work effectively and improve the wellbeing of all Australians,” Mr Plunkett said.

Pharmacists from all sectors of the profession are being catered for in the Pharmacy Australia Congress this year, with the wide-ranging program offering topics to give delegates a business and professional edge.

PAC10 is using as its base the World Health Organisation’s (WHO’s)  principle that the appropriate, efficient and cost-effective use of resources should be the foundation of a pharmacist’s work, regardless of which sector of the profession the pharmacist is engaged in. WHO has encapsulated this approach in its Seven Star Pharmacy principles which form the basis of PAC10’s over-arching theme of Star Performance - the future for pharmacy.
