SHPA CPD PBA compliant : 07/06/2010 :

SHPA's CPD offer has been updated to meet Pharmacy Board of Australia (PBA) requirements for registration renewal under the new scheme commencing 1 July 2010. 

According to SHPA President Neil Keen, “All members can meet these requirements seamlessly by using SHPA products that are part of their core membership and via the new CPD online recording system that guides them to record key learnings and to reflect on the value to their day to day work.  Members can print CPD summaries that include all activities and PBA CPD credits as either Group 1, 2 or 3 activities. Extra personal support is available via the email helpline and website materials that include frequently asked questions.  SHPA encourages lifelong learning and values CPD activities undertaken in the workplace.”

Penny Kraemer, Peter Tenni share AACP Pfizer Consultant Pharmacist of the Year award. Debbie Rigby new AACP Chair : 04/06/2010 :

At last weekend's ConPharm 2010, held in Hobart, Sydney pharmacist Penny Kraemer and Tasmanian pharmacist Peter Tenni were jointly named as the 2010 AACP Pfizer Consultant Pharmacists of the Year.

Also at ConPharm Debbie Rigby was confirmed as the next Chair of the AACP Board of Directors.

The latest edition of Australian Prescriber is out now and looks at topical issues including:

Variability in response to clopidogrel

Andrew McLachlan, Professor of Pharmacy (Aged Care) at the University of Sydney, and Terence Campbell, Head of the University Department of Medicine at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney, look at possible factors contributing to variability in patients' responses to clopidogrel. The authors give suggestions for overcoming so-called 'clopidogrel resistance'.

1/5 of Australia prisoners have been on an opioid replacement program : 04/06/2010 :

The Australian Institue of Health and Welfare yesterday published The health of Australia's prisoners 2009. The report is the culmination of several years' development of national indicators in relation to prisoner health in Australia

It reveals that, on a snapshot day during 2008, 7% of the 41,347 people across Australia receiving pharmacotherapy treatment for opioid addiction, were in prison. Almost one-fifth (19%) of prisoners reported that they had been on a pharmacotherapy program at some time in their life.

Poll: iPads grab the imagination : 04/06/2010 :

18% of the respondents to this week's AusPharm poll told us that they already had an iPad or were about to get one.

In addition to this 28% said they didn't need one because they already have an iPhone.

Be there or be square it seems!

PSA: Roadmap a welcome contribution to the 'future of pharmacy' debate : 04/06/2010 :

The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) says that the Guild's The Roadmap - The Strategic Direction for Community Pharmacy, released yesterday, will contribute to the debate on the future of Australian pharmacy.

PSA says that the timing of the Guild's Roadmap, after the PSA launched its Issues Paper on the Future of Australian Pharmacy, suggests that the Guild is anxious to ensure it has a strong voice in the forthcoming debate over the future direction of the profession.

Pharmacy Guild releases Roadmap : 03/06/2010 :

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia yesterday released The Roadmap - The Strategic Direction for Community Pharmacy. The Roadmap is an an analysis of where pharmacy is today, and a plan for its future direction. According to the Guild, the document provides practical mechanisms through which community pharmacy can develop future services nationally.

National President of the Guild, Kos Sclavos, said: "The Guild is determined to work hard to implement the vision outlined in The Roadmap. We are prepared to invest our own resources to achieve the enhanced role for pharmacy set out in The Roadmap."

PHARMeFOOTY weekly wrap : 02/06/2010 :

NRL Round 12 saw 6 tippers select all 7 winners correctly. The weekly result came down to Total Margin and it was Geordan Bates from MLC Centre Pharmacy who takes the prize, good work Geordan! In 2nd spot was Belinda Bullivant of Wamberal Pharmacy with Michael Buckley from Lawley Pharmaceuticals in 3rd place.

AFL Round 10 saw just the one tipper select all the 8 winners. Mario Barbagallo from Mooloolaba Beach managed to tip the perfect round and is a worthy winner of the weekly prize, well done Mario! In 2nd place was Sean Warren of Gordon Pharmacy with Erica Sorbello from Calanna Pharmacy taking 3rd spot.

Guild: pharmacists doing well on S3 codeine : 02/06/2010 :

According to the Pharmacy Guild, the codeine scheduling changes introduced on May 1 are being implemented responsibly by Australia’s community pharmacists.

In the lead up to May 1, the Guild conducted an information campaign among its members aiming to ensure the transition to the new legal requirements on OTC codeine were implemented appropriately. It added that it supports the message sent to pharmacists last week by the Pharmacy Board of New South Wales, reminding them that they must be personally involved in the sale of such medications and determine the appropriateness of the supply, having regard to their legal and ethical obligations.

The Guild says it shares the NSW Board’s confidence that “the majority of pharmacists will exercise their professional judgment in a responsible manner.”

New NPS program to address opioid use in chronic pain : 02/06/2010 :

The latest NPS therapeutic program, Opioid use in chronic pain: use a planned approach, explores ways of optimising the benefits of opioids in chronic pain while minimising the harms associated with inappropriate use.

These include careful patient selection, clear communication about the goals of opioid therapy, careful advice about proper use and close monitoring.

Cardiovascular disease a major threat to Australian women : 01/06/2010 :

Cardiovascular disease is a major threat to the health of Australian women, according to a new report to be released today by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

The report Women and heart disease: Cardiovascular profile of women in Australia shows that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among women.

‘In 2006, more than 24,100 women died of CVD—this was more than one-third of all women who died that year,’ said Susana Senes of the Institute’s Cardiovascular, Diabetes and Kidney Unit.

Actonel Combi D now has some competition : 01/06/2010 :

FOSAMAX PLUS D-Cal went on the PBS on June 1.

It's indicated for the treatment of osteoporosis where vitamin D and calcium supplementation is recommended and, from 1 June 2010, is available on the PBS for the treatment of established osteoporosis in women and men with facture due to minimal trauma.
