Vale Jim Selim : 25/05/2010 :

'Listers might be interested to read an account of a 1975 Pharmacy Board of NSW case that saw Mr Selim suspended for 3 months after being found guilty of professional misconduct. The Board found that, during the manufacture of a batch of cold tablets, he was responsible for substituting lactose for paracetamol.

We've had this document for some time but did not want to publish it for fear of circling lawyers. We're surprised that the mainstream media didn't make more of Mr Selim's past misdeeds during his time in the spotlight.

Medication Review Accreditation Incentive (MRAI) Program Update : 25/05/2010 :

As announced on budget night, the Medication Review Accreditation Incentives (MRAI) Program will not continue under the Fifth Agreement.

Details of transitional arrangements were released yesterday and these have been posted on the Australian Association of Consultant Pharmacists' website, here.

Number of ORT clients climbing (slowly) : 25/05/2010 :

The number of clients being treated for dependence on opioid drugs increased by over 2,000 in 2009, according to a report to be released today by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

The topic of this RGH E‑Bulletin is Complementary medicines for menopausal symptoms – part 1.

"The evidence for complementary medicines for the management of menopausal symptoms is still inconclusive. A number of agents have been studied; however the majority of clinical trials were poorly designed. Black cohosh and the phytoestrogens are the agents which have been studied the most. This E-bulletin will focus on black cohosh and a further edition will examine the effects of phytoestrogens."

News in from a couple of sources over the weekend is that the Pulse, Chemist Warehouse and My Chemist groups are all to have their trading terms with Sigma brought back to THREE months forward charging.

In the past, forward charging was said to be up to nine months.

eRx: e-scripts no cost to pharmacy : 24/05/2010 :

Dispensing of eRx electronic scripts will be effectively free for all pharmacies as a result of a new pricing policy to be announced today by eRx Script Exchange.

eRx will lower its transaction fee from 25c to match the 15c incentive payment under the Fifth Community Pharmacy Agreement and will process all e-scripts not currently funded by the incentive scheme (private and pharmacy initiated originals and repeats) at no cost.

Consumer rep for Pharmacy Board sought : 24/05/2010 :

The Pharmacy Board of Australia has called for expressions of interest for a community member appointment to the Board.

The appointment is for up to three years, with eligibility for a further period of appointment. The deadline for expressiobns of interest is 5.00pm EST on Monday 21 June 2010.

Expressions of interest: membership of Advisory committees on medicines scheduling : 24/05/2010 :

Revised scheduling arrangements for medicines and chemicals take effect on 1 July 2010 and include the establishment of two new expert advisory committees for scheduling: the Advisory Committee on Medicines Scheduling (ACMS) and the Advisory Committee on Chemicals Scheduling (ACCS).

These committees replace the 'old' National Drugs and Poisons Schedule Committee (NDPSC).

Time to consider our future : 21/05/2010 :

"It's time to consider our future" PSA President Warwick Plunkett told AusPharm yesterday.

The PSA President will today launch PSA's Issues Paper on the Future of Pharmacy.

According to Mr Plunkett the signing of the Fifth Community Pharmacy Agreement and the recently released Government responses to several high-profile reports herald future changes to the health system and present challenges to the roles played by pharmacists and other health professionals.

"In light of these and other factors, there is a need to take stock of where the pharmacy profession is now and where the profession wants to head. The first step in this process is the PSA’s Issues Paper on the Future of Pharmacy."

There's a great story in Wednesday's Sydney Telegraph about Pittwater Pharmacy's efforts in support of NRL team the Manly Sea Eagles.

"Sea Eagles diehards can get along to Pittwater Pharmacy at Mona Vale to have their medication put into maroon and white capsules, which also happen to be served by two Manly cheergirls - Georgia Norris and Amy Papandrea - who work at the store."

6 million Australians suffer chronic respiratory diseases : 20/05/2010 :

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) released two new reports on respiratory conditions today.

The first report, Asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other respiratory diseases in Australia, shows that in 2004–05 about 6 million Australians reported suffering from a chronic respiratory disease.

A second report, Asthma among older people in Australia, released today, shows that most deaths from asthma occur among older people.

SHPA: employment landscape changing : 20/05/2010 :

According to SHPA, the emerging oversupply of pharmacists has changed the pharmacy employment landscape.

“At the peak of the pharmacist shortage pharmacists’ wages in the private sector were driven up and the public hospital sector had difficulty competing.  But now, remuneration for pharmacists working in hospitals is very attractive” says Yvonne Allinson, SHPA CEO.

PSA: eHealth too important for politicians to play politics : 20/05/2010 :

The Shadow Minister for Finance and Debt Reduction, Andrew Robb, said yesterday that a Coalition government would scrap the planned $467 million eHealth strategy.

According to the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia this would be detrimental to the health of Australian consumers. National President of the PSA, Warwick Plunkett, urged the Coalition to think beyond politics when making health policy.

Industry: clinical trials under threat : 20/05/2010 :

Australia is a centre of excellence in clinical research, but our ability to continue attracting clinical trials to Australia is under threat, Medicines Australia said yesterday.

“Australia is at the cutting edge of clinical research but our long-term attractiveness as a location for clinical trials is under threat from emerging economies such as India, China, Russia and Brazil,” Dr Brendan Shaw, Medicines Australia Chief Executive, said.
