PHARMeFOOTY weekly wrap : 19/05/2010 :

NRL Round 10 saw just 2 tippers select all the 8 winners. Joshua Ohearn from Thornton and Joss Beare of Blooms the Chemist both had the perfect tipping round. Joshua had the better margin so takes the weekly prize, well done Joshua! In 3rd spot was Sally Seabrook from Cobden Pharmacy.

AFL Round 8 was hard work for tippers with only 2 selecting all 8 winners. Both Georgia Gilligan from Healthwise Pharmacy and Kerry Bryce of Collins St Pharmacy tipped the perfect round. The topic of this RGH E‑Bulletin is Amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis.

"Amiodarone is an effective class III anti-arrhythmic drug used in the management of atrial fibrillation to maintain sinus rhythm and to reduce shock delivery in patients with an implantable defibrillator. However the use of amiodarone can be associated with significant side effects, including thyroid dysfunction that thought to be due to amiodarone’s high iodine content and its direct toxic effect on the thyroid."

Employing another pharmacist might be a good idea : 14/05/2010 :

In light of the apparent surplus of pharmacists and declining wages, this week's poll asked 'listers whether their pharmacy might consider putting on another pharmacist.

Almost a quarter of our repondents told us that they've already put on another pharmacist and that this is *a good thing*. Another (almost a) quarter are considering doing the same. Another (almost a) quarter seem to be telling us that keeping the wages down is what they're after.

The spin of the 5th Agreement : 13/05/2010 :

Here is another view of the 5th Agreement, as posted by John Woodward on AusPharmL:ist today.

The "2010 Pharmacy Guild of Australia Budget Brief" states that the: "The funding pool allocated to various professional pharmacy programs amounts to $752.81 million. This represents a 32 per cent increase on the previous Agreement and includes new programs such as electronic prescriptions, Medication Continuance, Medicines Use Reviews, and supply and PBS-claiming from a medicine chart in nursing homes."   I assume then that the previous agreement had $570.31 milion allocated to professional services.

Of the above listed "professional programs" I would only consider Medicines Use Reviews to be truely professional.  Electronic prescriptions, Medication Continuance, and supply and PBS-claiming from a medicine chart in nursing homes are still supply functions.

Poll: will your pharmacy be putting on another pharmacist? : 12/05/2010 :

There has been much discussion on AusPharmList in recent weeks about the apparent oversupply of pharmacists (and declining wages) in the workplace. In a great post Leon Yap argued that this is in fact a good thing and that it makes professional and economic sense for pharmacies to consider employing pharmacist rather than non pharmacist staff. This is in line with comments from Guild President Kos Sclavos that having plenty of pharmacists available positions pharmacy well to assist government with its health reform agenda.

Are you convinced? Is it likely the pharmacy you're in will accept this advice? Please let us know by voting in today's AusPharm poll.
