Hip fractures decline : 05/03/2010 :

The incidence of hip fractures among older Australians declined consistently between 1997- 98 and 2006-07, according to a report to be released today by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) today.

The report The problem of osteoporotic hip fracture in Australia shows that over the ten year period, the incidence rate for osteoporotic hip fracture decreased by 14% for men and by 20% for women.

Flu vaccine surplus? : 05/03/2010 :

This week's AusPharm poll asked 'listers whether they were likely to be caught with excess flu vaccine stock by the sudden and unexpected announcement mid February that flu vaccines have been taken off the PBS.

The answer seems to be, mostly, no - although a significant minority tell us that they will be caught 'big time', with too much stock pre-ordered.

Guild says health reforms an opportunity for pharmacy : 04/03/2010 :

The Pharmacy Guild said yesterday saying that it believes the Federal Government's proposal to take full policy and funding responsibility for hospital, GP and primary health care services in Australia presents a “once in a generation opportunity for community pharmacy”.

According to the Guild, the proposed changes will open the way for community pharmacy to negotiate funding for professional pharmacy programs to be delivered in both private and public hospital pharmacies.

Folic acid message still needs selling : 03/03/2010 :

50 years after folic acid was first thought to prevent birth defects, health experts are calling on young women to increase their folic acid intake well in advance of conception and throughout pregnancy to reduce the possibility of spina bifida developing in their children.

Every year, around 50 babies in Australia are born alive with spina bifida, which can cause severe lifelong disabilities, including lower limb paralysis and learning difficulties.

Pharmacist's Out-of-the-Box Thinking Helps Haitian Earthquake Victims : 02/03/2010 :

'Listers might be interested to have a look at the role US emergency department pharmacist, Shannon Manzi, played in the immediate aftermath of the Haiti earthquake in January.

Manzi, a member of the Massachusetts-1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT), worked in Port-au-Prince alongside Boston-based International Medical Surgical Response Team (IMSuRT)-East.

Tasmanian pharmacy swine flu vaccination trial a raging success : 02/03/2010 :

Early last month we reported on a trial in Tasmanian pharmacies to offer free swine flu vaccinations, administered by nurses.
 
The trial was duly conducted with 2,500 people given vaccinations in five pharmacies in the course of one week. The trial, conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, demonstrated that pharmacies could be successfull utilised as vaccination sites.

Pharmacists’ Support Service restructures, plans expansion : 02/03/2010 :

The Pharmacists’ Support Service has taken the first step to becoming a fully independent service to service pharmacists throughout Australia by becoming an Incorporated Association.

Members met in February and voted to accept Articles of Association and a new independent Committee of Management representing a wide range of national pharmacy organisations.

Guild releases codeine guidelines : 01/03/2010 :

The Pharmacy Guild has produced and made publicly available a range of resources relating to new regulations that will apply to the supply of combination analgesics containing codeine after May 1.

These include a Pharmacy Preparation Fact Sheet, a Pharmacy/Consumer Fact Sheet, a Draft staff meeting agenda and Quality Use of Medicines (QUM) Information. There is also an FAQ section.

Western Australia 2010 Pharmacy Cricket champions : 01/03/2010 :

"Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) refers to the measurement of drug concentrations in biological fluids with the goal of optimising a patient’s drug therapy and clinical outcomes. Drugs where TDM is used include those with a narrow therapeutic index, concentration-dependent pharmacokinetics, or where the desired therapeutic effect is difficult to monitor or there are large pharmacokinetic variations between individuals."

Poll: who delivers the drugs? : 26/02/2010 :

In light of comments on AusPharmList about whether staff vehicles are covered by insurance when doing deliveries, this week's poll sought to find out how prevalent this practice is.

Very prevalent, is the answer, with 41% of respondents using staff vehicles at least some of the time.

We'll see if we can get clarification on the insurance issues from our friends at Guild Insurance.

Industry defends herbal medicines : 26/02/2010 :

In light of safety concerns aired on Wednesday night 7.30 Report, the Australian Self-Medication Industry (ASMI), the industry body representing non-prescription consumer healthcare products, said consumers should treat with caution reports suggesting there are lethal dangers associated with herbal remedies.

ASMI was responding to claims made in a research paper by Professor Roger Byard of the University of Adelaide published in the US-based Journal of Forensic Sciences which was featured on the ABC’s The 7:30 Report on Wednesday night.

Blackmores powers along : 26/02/2010 :

Complementary medicine manufacturer Blackmores released its results for the first half of the current financial year yesterday.

The company continues to provide shareholders with good news. Sales were up 14% on the previous year, net profit (after tax) was up 7% to $12.8 million and an interim divident for shareholders of 42c a share (up 8%) was declared.

Blackmores attributes the strong result to the release of 40 new products and the expansion of its overseas range
