Food or medicine? : 07/10/2009 :

As the food and complementary medicine sectors have evolved over recent years, a 'grey area' has developed where it is sometimes difficult to determine whether a product should be  classified as a food or as a medicine.

In order to resolve this dilemma, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is proposing that any product presented in capsule, tablet or pill form be classified as a medicine.

The TGA is inviting comments on the proposal, here.

Access Economics PBS projections updated : 06/10/2009 :

The latest analysis of the sustainability of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), commissioned by the Pharmacy Guild of Australia and conducted by Access Economics, has found that the cost of the PBS to taxpayers will continue to come in much lower than the estimates put forward in the Federal Government’s 2002 and 2007 Intergenerational Reports (IGR1&2).

A key finding of the report, which takes into account the latest fiscal settings of the Commonwealth Budget and updated population growth forecasts, is the improved position of PBS spending as a percentage of GDP taking the same point in the future – namely the 2041-42 financial year as IGR1&2.

This can present particular problems and challenges for pharmacists and these will be addressed in a presentation at the Pharmacy Australia Congress being held in Sydney from 15-18 October.

RGH E-Bulletin: Insulin glargine and associated cancer risk : 05/10/2009 :

"A long acting insulin analogue might be considered for diabetic patients who suffer significant hypoglycaemia, whether or not they achieve their target HbA1c. It may be useful for those who cannot use the device needed to inject NPA insulin, or who need a carer to administer injections and for whom switching to a longer acting insulin analogue reduces the number of daily injections. It has been proposed that insulin might act as a tumour growth factor, and that alteration to the insulin molecule may increase its trophic effects."
