AusPharm news

Nicola Roxon gets the nod : 28/09/2007 :

This week's AusPharm poll was the first of a few election related polls AusPharm has planned for coming weeks.

We asked people who they thought the next Health Minister would be and the clear favourite is the ALP's Nicola Roxon, herself the daughter of two pharmacists. In a broader sense 'listers thought that the next Health Minister would come from the ALP (50%) rather than the Coalition (28%).

This broadly agrees with other polls that has it that people think the ALP will win the federal election due in the next month or two.

Rural Pharmacy Promotional Campaign : 27/09/2007 :

Further to our story on Monday our friends from the Rural Pharmacy Workforce Program secretariat have sent us a copy of one of the TV ads.

It's not bad and, for mine, should appeal to its target audience of senior secondary school students. Click the image at right to watch the ad (3.2 mb .wmv file - 30 sec video).

AusPharm will de-identify and publish these 'conversations' in the hope that they may provide some assistance to other 'listers.

UK to have pharmacies without pharmacists on site : 24/09/2007 :

This week's Pharmaceutical Journal reports that legislative changes in the UK will mean that, commencing in 2008, pharmacies will be able to operate without having a pharmacist physically present.

In such circumstances prescriptions could be dispensed without a pharmacist actually seeing the prescription. Pharmacists would assume the role of 'director of dispensary activities' and could 'supervise' pharmacy activities from a remote location.

The details are still to be worked out and how pharmacies in the UK will handle this remains to be seen.

Sigma share price hammered after profit downgrade : 21/09/2007 :

Sigma shares dropped as low as $1.25 yesterday after CEO Elmo de Alwis announced a 39 per cent decline in first half profit on the prior corresponding period. The stock has more than halved in value this year, with the Sigma market value dropping to $1.3 billion. De Alwis blamed the result on problems with the CSO, interest rate rises and "the non-compliance with generics and over-the-counter commitments of the Embrace program."

Smoking damages nearly every organ in the body : 18/09/2007 :

Yesterday's Research Roundup contained a link to an article about drug interactions and smoking.

Following the smoking theme, AusPharm has at times in the past looked for a good web based guide about the effects of smoking on the human body. As it happens a 'lister sent along the reference at left last week and it looked good to us!.

It contains a blow by blow, evidence based description of how smoking affects the various body organs. It is produced by the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
