AusPharm news

Albury hosts 9th National Rural Health Conference : 19/03/2007 :

With all of the recent discussion on AusPharmList about matters rural it seems appropriate to draw 'listers' attention to the outcomes of the 9th National Rural Health Conference which was held in Albury from March 7 - 10.

Poll results: managing dispensing errors : 16/03/2007 :

This week's poll asked people whether or not their pharmacies had a *formal* process for managing dispensing errors. As 'listers pointed out in AusPharmList posts, it *is* important to record and anlayse errors and 'near misses' so that we can learn from errors made (or nearly made). If you count the 'it's on my to do list' responses as 'no', it seems 'listers are split pretty much down the middle on whether or not the appropriate mechanisms are in place.

PILs, CMIs, que? : 15/03/2007 :

The value of routinely issuing CMI (Consumer Medicine Information) to patients has often been debated on AusPharmList and it seems it may be a hot topic for our colleagues in the UK as well. Patients have plenty to say about the usefulness of Patient Information Leaflets (PILs), according to a report in The Pharmaceutical Journal.

Poll: quality control and dispensing errors : 14/03/2007 :

AusPharm, who still works in community pharmacy twice a week, recently had brought to its attention three dispensing errors it (he!) made in a three month period late last year. While none of these were 'serious' (Betaloc 50mg instead of 100mg, Rozex Cream instead of Gel, Deptran 25mg instead of 50mg) it has us wondering about how many more errors are made that we do not catch and do no harm. What is the incidence of dispensing errors in other pharmacies and, more importantly, how do people manage these?

Do you *ALWAYS* file an incident report to PDL? Do you have an internal process to record, analyse and act on errors reported? Is this a formal or informal process? Or do you just thank your lucky stars that no harm was done and forget it. Please let us know what happens in your pharmacy both by tickling the relevant box in this week's AusPharm poll below AND by clicking this link to compose a post to AusPharmList.

Generic simvastatin prices : 13/03/2007 :

Many AusPharmers will be aware of rumours of an impending 20% price cut for generic simvastatin. AusPharm has information that while discussions are taking place between the Department of Health and Ageing and at least one supplier with a view to implementing a 20% reduction later in 2007 this is far from a done deal. In the meantime the following actual April 1 prices lobbed in our inbox yesterday.

National registration of pharmacists a step closer : 13/03/2007 :

Long term' listers will recall the numerous calls on AusPharmList over the years for a national registration process for pharmacists to replace state based registration. Well, it seems the Australian government is now moving towards this with the Prime Minister saying in a statement released yesterday during his visit to Japan, "If a pharmacist or doctor needs a locum, they will be able to draw on a professional from any part of Australia as long as they are registered nationally."

e-Prescribing and dispensing creeping (sloooowwwwly) closer : 12/03/2007 :

For many years the concepts of electronic prescribing and dispensing of medicines have been under discussion in Australia. Interest in the project has increased considerably since the Commonwealth Minister for Health and Ageing, Tony Abbott announced on 27 July 2006 the Government's approval of the National Health (Pharmaceutical Benefits) Amendment Regulations 2006 to remove Commonwealth barriers to electronic prescribing and dispensing.

Two issues with ps**doeph**rin* says PSA : 09/03/2007 :

According to Pharmaceutical Society of Australia National Vice-President Debbie Rigby: "In this debate it is important to note that there are two separate issues involved here - a security issue and a professional issue.

"PSA believes it is extremely important that pharmacists and staff feel secure in their workplaces. There are many strategies that can and should be employed by pharmacy proprietors - who, after all, often work side-by-side with employee pharmacists and other staff - to ensure adequate security.

In an announcement to the ASX yesterday, API reported that its earnings for the year's second quarter was "in-line with the company's expectations" of the $39 million it forecast in December.

Clearly, API's customers have stuck by them as their pharmacy division's sales matched the same period last and their retail division was up more than 6% on the same period last year. More.......

249 'listers answered the call and the results are shown at right. They seem to show that, to a degree, pharmacists are of two minds on this.
