AusPharm news

Which web browser do you use? : 28/12/2005 :

When AusPharm first used the Internet back in 1995 Netscape was the browser that had the lion's share of the market. Netscape came free with the software bundles Internet Service Providers were giving their customers when they signed up. We moved to Internet Explorer in the late 1990's as the Microsoft juggernaut strengthened its market dominance but in recent times we have moved again to Firefox, finding that this is quicker to load most web sites and has some other features that suit us.

As the browser people use impacts on how we set up the AusPharm websites we would love for you to tell us which one(s) you use so, please do our browser poll in today's (e)news!

Information sheets for new 20 days rules are on the way : 21/12/2005 :

AusPharm has been in possession of electronic copies of the information leaflets supporting the changes to the 20 day rule for a week now. Sadly, we have been unable to distribute these as the legislative process underpinning the changes has not completed. However, AusPharm is advised the SN20DR information packs are in the process of being distributed to community pharmacies Australia wide and that that hard copies of these documents HAVE already been dispatched in most States. A soon as we are able we will post these to our website.

New AusPharmList 'safe zone' for student posts : 07/12/2005 :

On a few occasions over the years pharmacy students have posted to AusPharmList only to be monstered by other (insensitive) AusPharmListers. There is a general sense amongst students that AusPharmList isn't always "safe" and this has resulted in many students being reluctant to contribute to discussions.

AusPharmList has discussed this with the good people at NAPSA (National Association of Pharmacy Student Associations) and we have decided to offer students the ability to flag their contributions with the tag: [student]. This will have the dual effect of alerting other AusPharmListers to the fact that a post is from a student and it will also flag this to list moderators who will then be better equipped to screen responses if this is necessary.

API says 'We're not talking to Woolworths' : 01/12/2005 :

AusPharmers would have seen the report in yesterday's (e)news quoting the Australian newspaper's story suggesting that API were deep in discussion with Woolworths Ltd about a possible "friendly takeover" of API by Woolworths Ltd.

The Australian newspaper's Michael West continued the API/Woolworth's merger line in another story in todays Australian.

"One research analyst told The Australian yesterday that if Woolworths didn't pounce on API, another distributor would surely be in the sights of the supermarket chain. "It's a low-margin, low-volume business that makes perfect sense (for Woolworths to acquire)," he said. API rival Sigma has been busy bedding down its merger with Arrow Pharmaceuticals. And Symbion is settling new management."

API were quick to deny the Australian report yesterday morning via both an ASX announcement and in a fax to its pharmacy customers. To read these, please click on the following link.

Pharmacists rank highly again --> Kos Sclavos says 'well done' : 28/11/2005 :

The 2005 Roy Morgan Survey of professional ethics and honesty once again has pharmacists ranking number 2, second only to nurses. This is an excellent result when one considers the media bashing the pharmacy profession has endured over the last 12 months.

Phenylephrine looks like a goer : 28/10/2005 :

Many thanks to the 148 people who completed our recent pseudoephedrine survey which looked at how pharmacists are planning to manage their pseudoephedrine stock with the scheduling change due on January 1, 2006, and the changeover to phenylephrine-base cold and decongestant tablets when the choice becomes available.

The raw data, including all the comments, is available here http://www.auspharm.net.au/pseudoresults.php (login required)

My reading of these has me believing that:

  • pseudoephedrine stock holding and brand range will be reduced in 2006 with many smaller brands disappearing all together.
  • there is a high degree of acceptance of phenylephrine, even though there is some uncertainty on comparative efficacy and safety versus pseudoephedrine.
  • phenylephrine brands that are slow to market could lose market share to early innovators, although there is a reasonable degree of brand loyalty
  • many pharmacists are already looking for an alternative decongestant

"The thing I really, really hate about you pharmacists is that you scare my patients...." : 27/10/2005 :

A new Practice Pearl has been published on AusPharm today.

Whenever you dispense a tube of ointment for a rash, you likely add on the label: "Apply sparingly; Just a thin smear" ... which is what most of our dispensing software systems suggest. What is very wrong with this? Click here to find out.

AusPharm cocks up copy for last Job of the week : 25/10/2005 :

In the (e)news of Monday October 10 the AusPharm Job of the week described a series of opportunities to work in Newman, WA for 8-16 week blocks.

If you'd like to feel appreciated by the public as a professional primary care provider, look no further than coming to this mining town. As the only pharmacy in this remote location people appreciate your input to their general health care needs. With a light script load of under 100 scripts per day, you have the opportunity to get out and utilise your knowledge as you have been trained to do. It is a great opportunity to make a difference and learn a lot as the Pharmacist In Charge, with the proprietor providing a supportive role whilst working on the business and taking a backseat role in the store.

Sadly, the website version of this ad mistakenly referred to a salary package of $130K and followed up with the comment "No pain, no gain". This amount and this comment applied to the PREVIOUS Job of the week, not the Newman position.
