Pharmacy Alliance member numbers up : 10/11/2014 :

As of 30 October, the Pharmacy Alliance group now has 477 member pharmacies - a rise of 27 since July 2014.

The group has just completed the final round of its 2014 member meetings that saw the launch of a new strategy that aims to 'shift the pharmacy paradigm and win the hearts and minds of consumers for all members'.

RGH E‑Bulletin: Tolvaptan for the treatment of hyponatremia : 10/11/2014 :

The topic of this week's RGH E‑Bulletin is Tolvaptan for the treatment of hyponatremia.

"Tolvaptan is a selective vasopressin V 2 receptor antagonist and is the first vaptan agent to be approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration for use in Australia in July 2014.  Hyponatremia is a common electrolyte abnormality and is manifested by a reduction in serum sodium levels with symptoms ranging from nausea to coma and seizures. The reference range for normal serum sodium normal values is between 135 and 145 mmol/l."

UTS barometer dispensing fee finding confirmed : 07/11/2014 :

This week's AusPharm poll (n=228) has confirmed the finding in the recent UTS Pharmacy Barometer survey (n=268) that a majority of pharmacists support the notion of differential dispensing fees based on the amount of patient interaction.

Credentialing of Advanced Practice Pharmacists - volunteers needed : 07/11/2014 :

The Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) is looking for pharmacists interested in preparing a portfolio for evaluation in accordance with the recently developed standards, policies and procedures for the credentialing of Advanced Practice Pharmacists.

Pharmacists chosen to participate in the pilot program will need to submit their portfolios in early April 2015. These will be evaluated at no charge by APC.

Former Guild SA President awarded Barry Schultz medal : 06/11/2014 :

The former President of the Guild’s South Australian Branch, Adelaide pharmacist Mr Ian Todd, has been awarded the Barry Schultz medal for 2014.

The medal is awarded to a pharmacist deemed to have demonstrated the qualities that made the late Barry Schultz such a distinguished pharmacist and community member.

Pharmaceuticals Industry Council Ceases Operations : 06/11/2014 :

The Pharmaceuticals Industry Council (PIC), a collaboration of AusBiotech, the Generic Medicines Industry Association and Medicines Australia, has ceased operations.

The PIC was formed in 2006, following the conclusion in 2005 of the three-year implementation of the Government-endorsed Pharmaceuticals Industry Action Agenda (PIAA). Its aim was to build on the PIAA’s vision of doubling Australia’s share of the global pharmaceuticals industry by 2012.

Poll: do you support differential dispensing fees based on the amount of patient interaction? : 05/11/2014 :

One of the findings of the 2014 UTS Pharmacy Barometer, released last week, was that 2/3 of pharmacists support the notion of a differential dispensing fee, based on the amount of patient interaction for a dispensing event. There was little difference in opinion between owners (66%), pharmacist managers (72%) and employee pharmacists (64%).

Let's see if we can reproduce these results. Do you support differential dispensing fees based on the amount of patient interaction?

The highly regarded ignite program has been developed by the PSA to meet the ongoing leadership and career development needs of early career pharmacists (ECPs).

National President of PSA, Grant Kardachi, said ignite aimed to develop high-performing ECPs into future health leaders.

APLF: highlight the active ingredient : 04/11/2014 :

The Australian Pharmacy Liaison Forum (APLF) - a group representing all of the peak professional bodies for pharmacy - has urged pharmacists to reinforce the name of the active ingredient when dispensing medicines to patients.

APLF says it is concerned about the possibility of medication errors associated with the use of unfamiliar brand names on generic medicines in particular and is reminding pharmacists they have a duty-of-care to ensure that consumers are provided with sufficient, clear and unambiguous information about the medicines they are taking.

Blackmores, Swisse win CMA awards : 04/11/2014 :

Over 250 delegates attended last week's Complementary Medicines Australia (CMA) 2014 National Conference and Industry Awards, held in Sydney on 30 October.

CMA chief executive, Mr Carl Gibson, said, “we were delighted to present an exceptional program of Australian and International speakers, each providing a fresh insight in exploring the theme ‘The Wellness Revolution’, a theme that encompasses a number of key approaches for how our industry can continue to innovate, grow, and contribute to improved consumer health.”

Transforming Pharmacy - a key theme of ASMI 2014 Conference : 04/11/2014 :

Four sessions at the ASMI 2014 Conference on 18 November 2014 have been accredited for pharmacist's CPD credits.

Ms Filomena Maiese, ASMI Marketing and Business Development Director said: “The conference will explore the expanding role of pharmacy, as well as some of the major issues impacting pharmacy and the healthcare consumer. "In the contemporary approach to asthma management, where does the combination product based upon the drugs fluticasone furoate/vilanterol fit? The Australian Asthma Handbook (AAH, asthmahandbook.org.au) provides evidence-based and consensus guidance on the diagnosis and management of asthma. It includes a number of clinically important changes since the previous guidance; these were summarised in a previously published E-bulletin from early September 2014."

PSA: don't cut staff, implement Heath Destination Pharmacy instead : 03/11/2014 :

Responding to data generated in the latest UTS Pharmacy Barometer that that two-thirds of owners, managers and pharmacists-in-charge intended to replace lost (PBS) revenue by cutting staff costs, the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia says its Health Destination Pharmacy model, to be released soon, is a better option.

The program's pilot showed the model met consumer’s needs but also resulted in significantly increased profits, mainly through non-government funds. The model relies entirely on professional pharmacist input, with the staff and business system focus on health and minor ailment services.

Guild, PSA respond to differential dispensing fee finding : 03/11/2014 :

Dispensing is the foundation of community pharmacy and underpins the jobs of 18,000 pharmacists around Australia enabling them to provide a high quality service to their patients says Executive Director of the Pharmacy Guild, David Quilty.

Mr Quilty was commenting on a UTS Pharmacy Barometer finding that over 2/3 of pharmacists support a differential dispensing fee with more complex dispensing events paid more.
