Each month our friends at Pharmacy Self Care will be providing us with a copy of the feature article from that month's Self Care InPHARMation magazine.

The August issue of InPHARMation focuses on depression.

Depression is a very common illness in the community – 1 in 7 Australians will suffer from depression in their lifetime. However despite this many people living with depression find it hard to ask for support. It is important that pharmacists and pharmacy assistants are aware of the signs and symptoms of depression, and the best way to communicate with people who may be suffering from this condition.

Poll: Pfizer Direct - how's it working out now? : 06/08/2014 :

On January 31, 2011 Pfizer rolled out its Pfizer Direct exclusive supply model that saw its prescription medicines supplied directly to community pharmacy and no longer able to be sourced through pharmacy wholesalers.

There was widespread criticism from pharmacists, wholesalers and others at the time at the move. Pharmacists were unhappy they had another supplier to deal with and that supply arrangements were not as flexible as those provided by the CSO wholesalers. The wholesalers argued the move put at risk their viability and, by extension, the entire PBS supply chain.

Three and a half years on, we're wondering how pharmacists feel about the company now.

Please let us know how you feel about Pfizer and its exclusive supply arrangements, three and a half years on, by voting in this week's AusPharm poll.

Alphapharm and EpiPen® : 06/08/2014 :

Alphapharm has denied claims made by pharmacists recently that it favours API customer pharmacies when supplying long dated Epipens.

"Alphapharm fills orders for EpiPen® with product that has the shortest expiry date being shipped first," a spokesperson said.

"It is possible that pharmacies with a high turnover of EpiPen® may use their stock up, re-order and then have later expiring EpiPen® than other low turnover pharmacies," she added.

"Regular training of Alphapharm customer service representatives will be updated to ensure awareness of this practice."

"While the Australian medicines industry remains one of Australia's leading manufacturing exporters, a fall of 13.5 per cent in exports in one year is a real worry," said Medicines Australia Chief Executive Dr Brendan Shaw.
