Children account for a large proportion of people with asthma and managing a child’s asthma in a range of respects is different to managing an adult’s.

The medication mix-up that cost one elderly woman her life : 23/06/2014 :

Last Friday's pharmacy story on  A Current Affair - foreshadowed in posts to AusPharmList on Friday - focused on one of the methotrexate related deaths referred to in the Pharmacy Board of Australia's 13 June communiqué. The death came as a consequence of the drug being packed as a daily rather than weekly dose in a dose administration aid (DAA).

The ACA story presented the facts in the usual sensational fashion it favours but some balance was provided with the inclusion of an interview with high profile and respected pharmacist John Bell.

The topic of this week's RGH E‑Bulletin is Antipsychotic-induced akathisia.

"Akathisia is one of the most commonly experienced extrapyramidal adverse effects associated with antipsychotic medication. It is characterised by feelings of inner restlessness with a compelling urge to keep moving, and patients may present with frequent pacing, a continual shifting of weight or an inability to sit still. Depending upon severity this can impact upon medication adherence, or may contribute to aggression or an increased risk for suicide. Symptoms of akathisia may also be misinterpreted as signs of agitation associated with psychosis and treatment inefficacy."

Atorvastatin down another 46% in October : 20/06/2014 :

The October PBS Price Disclosure Reductions were published on the PBS website yesterday afternoon. These are the first under the new 'simplified price disclosure' protocol, announced by the former Labor government - without consultation with the pharmacy profession - immediately prior to the 2013 federal election.

Amongst the more significant reductions are atorvastatin – down 46% and venlafaxine – down 33%. Simvastatin suffered a further 50% price drop which sees the PBS return price for 20mg simvastatin now a lowly $3.04, a far cry from its initial PBS listing price, in 1992, of $63.18.
