Specialist flu group urges all adults to vaccinate this year : 04/04/2014 :

A new Influenza Specialist Group (ISG)* survey suggests that, despite warnings this year's flu might cause more illness in young to middle aged adults than in previous years, this demographic is in no hurry to get vaccinated.

Given the expected circulating 2014 influenza strain has a history of causing potentially serious illness and complications in the 35-49 age group, the ISG is urging all adult Australians to consider vaccination in the lead up to winter.

Poll: I would join employee pharmacist union, Professional Pharmacists Australia except... : 02/04/2014 :

In a post to AusPharmList this week Kevin Hayward asked 'Do we need a new employee pharmacist union?' - the question was prompted by his impression that the existing union - Professional Pharmacists Australia (PPA) - lacks 'any robust voice in shaping the future of  the profession'.

PPA officials leapt to its defence and defended its work. Another 'lister, Val Cosic, pointed out that "People don't join because they don't see any meaningful difference an organisation has had (or are unware of it?) for the fees they are required to pay. Without the membership base, the union doesn't have the clout or weight behind anything it does, particularly at grassroots level."

Have you joined PPA? If not, why not? Please let us know by ticking the relevant box in today's AusPharm poll.

Safety alert: Codeine use in children after tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy : 02/04/2014 :

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is warning health professionals about the dangers of using codeine to treat pain in children after they have had a tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy.

Codeine is partially metabolised to morphine in the liver via CYP2D6 - patients who are deficient in or lacking this enzyme cannot convert codeine to morphine and therefore may not experience adequate pain relief. Conversely, patients who metabolise codeine to morphine very rapidly ('ultra-rapid metabolisers') are at increased risk of morphine toxicity, even at low codeine doses.
